ACCOUNT REGISTRATION AND ENTRY

Why can't I find my account activation email?

If you don't see the account activation email in your inbox after you register, you should then check your spam box in case it has been blocked by your spam filter. You may also need to scroll down or do a search, as the email may have been pushed further down the list by other mail.

If you still can't find the email you can contact us. Please include your registered email address so we can look it up in our system.

Why can't I log in?

Make sure your email address is the address on file, and your password is correct. If you have forgotten your password you can request a new temporary password that will be sent to your email.

Your account must be activated in order to log in. If your account is active and you are still having trouble, try requesting a new temporary password and using that to enter the site.

It is possible we may be experiencing technical difficulty. If the problem persists for an extended period, please contact us.

How do I change my password?

You can change your password from within your account preferences.

PROFILES and ALIASES

What is an alias?

Your alias is a unique username that identifies you from everyone else. Creating an alias is required for your profile, sending messages, and adding friends.

Why do you ask for my expertise?

Our user-contributed search engine is based on sharing information in order to find quality online resources. By sharing your expertise, people with similar interests or who are searching for things you may know about can network with you.

Your expertise also gives everyone uniques insight into your personal online experience and the websites that interest you most.

What if I'm not an expert at anything?

Everyone is an expert at something. Whether you choose a serious or light-hearted answer to the question, it will give people insight into your interests and personality.

What does it mean to be "thanked"?

Being thanked means that someone appreciated the help you gave them in their search.

Generally, you can be thanked when you use your postbox to recommend websites to searchers.

How do I change my "Top 100" websites?

In your public profile, your favorite websites are ordered according to the amount of SP you've spent on each listing. The more indexes you create by adding search phrases, the higher that site will rise in the top 100.

How do I choose my favorite search phrase?

Your "favorite search phrase" is automatically determined best on the search phrase you've applied to the most site. So if you want "tazmanian devil" to be your favorite search phrase, you should find more web pages about tazmanian devils.

LISTINGS MANAGEMENT

What can I do with my listings?

Your listings are a complete record of all the sites you visit, review, and recommend on SearchSays. We give you a set of tools that allow you to edit your personal Internet listings. You can also index more search phrases (see earn your words).

How can I search through my listings?

We give you several options for searching and sorting through your listings.

To find listings by search phrase, all you need to do is type the desired search phrase into the box and press search.

Choose any letter of the alphabet to see only sites (domain names) that begin with that letter.

You can also click the sort options to arrange listings by site name, updated date, or number of SPs spent. Clicking an option more than once will toggle between ascending and descending order.

What does it mean to "archive" a listing?

An archived listing will be removed from your public profile's internet listings (where it says top 100, etc.).

However, the listing will still appear when someone searches the search engine.

If I delete a listing is it permanent?

Once you delete a listing you will no longer be able to access that listing or make edits, and your review will no longer appear when visitors search on SearchSays.

How do I edit a review?

1.) Go to your listing management page.

2.) Find the review you wish to edit, and click the button.

3.) Make all the appropriate changes and hit the submit button when complete.

Why should I edit my review?

If you find spelling or grammatical errors, you may wish to edit your review.

If one of your reviews is outdated, or your opinion has changed, you may wish to edit your review.

Editing your review can affect your overall quality rating and how fast you earn SP in the Earn Your Words program.

POSTBOX

What is my postbox?

Your postbox contains messages that other SearchSays members have sent to you, and allows you to reply and compose new messages.

What does it mean to say "thanks"?

We keep track of the number of times any member is thanked by someone else.

When the "say thanks" option appears in your inbox, you can click this to let the member and the community know that you appreciated someone's help.

What does it mean to request a "helping hand"?

We are a community of helping one another find the best resources on the Internet. You can "request a helping hand" and ask other members where to continue your online search based on their expertise.

How do I turn off email alerts?

If you do not wish to receive an email everytime someone messages you from SearchSays, you can go to your account preference. Once there, uncheck the alerts checkbox, and you will stop receiving those emails.

SITE REVIEW

How do I review a site?

You can always add your favorite sites to the search engine by going here.

You can also review existing listings from the search results page, after you submit a search.

Can I edit my review listings?

Yes, you can edit your reviews from your listings management page, located in your account preferences.

How do I choose a good search phrase?

Here is some general advice on choosing search phrases when adding a review:

1.) Pick a phrase that you would use yourself to find the site.

2.) Choose a search term that is longer than one word.

3.) Be specific; use adjectives or locations when appropriate (i.e. "intimate sf restaurants" or "how to change a light bulb").

Can I list my review under more than one search phrase?

Yes, you can. Learn more about the Earn Your Words program.

Why is my URL invalid?

All submitted page URLs must begin with "http://" or "https://" and lead to a live web page. To ensure an error free submission, it is best to copy and paste the URL directly from the address bar of your browser.

EARN YOUR WORDS

What is Earn Your Words?

Learn more about Earn Your Words here.

What are SP?

You can think of SP as rewards points. The more you contribute on SearchSays, the more SP you earn. SP can be spent on more search phrases, making your reviews easier to find.

How do I earn SP?

You can earn SP by writing reviews or voting on sites. The amount of SP earned varies, but you can earn SP faster by having a better quality rating.

How do I spend SP?

1.) Go to your listing management page.

2.) Find the review you wish to add a search phrase to and click the button.

3.) Type a search phrase and hit the submit button. One new search phrase costs 1 SP.

What is my quality rating?

Based on user feedback, you get an overall quality rating for your reviews. This score is used to determine how fast you can accrue SP.

Currently, we do not publicize your exact quality rating. However, as your quality rating goes up and down, you should notice a change in how quickly you earn SP.

How many search phrases can I add?

You can add as many search phrases as you like to any given review as long as you have enough SP to use. Each new search phrase costs 1 SP.

How does this help my reviews?

The Earn Your Words program helps more people find your reviews. It can also give your reviews more exposure than someone else's.

For example, let's say John S. and Jane D. both write reviews about http://www.searchsays.com. Using their earned SP, John S. lists his review under: search engines, popular search tools, and browse the internet, while Jane D. lists her review under: search engines and search the web.

1.) If a searcher submits a search for "popular search tools" or "browse the internet" then the review written by John S. will be shown.

2.) If a searcher submits a search for "search the web" then the review written by Jane D. will be shown.

3.) If a searcher submits a search for "search engines" then the review shown will depend on who has the higher quality rating.

NOTE: If your quality rating is low, your review may not be shown in the above example.
